Online shops are growing as fast as the number of online buyers. That means that admins and marketing managers of e-shops are trapped in the jungles of spreadsheets and unlimited amounts of information. There are many solutions for this issue, but we feel that there is one that works perfectly with Magento: Akeneo. Akeneo is a Product Information Management system which is already widely used among e-commerce companies.
On October 10th Akeneo PIM 2.0 was presented to the world. Why did Akeneo go from 1.7 version straight to 2.0 version? The creators say it’s because Akeneo 2.0 is a real transformation, and not just a simple adaptation.
During a webinar we were introduced to a new great interface and the new features of Akeneo PIM 2.0. So what exactly has been changed and improved?
Migration is required within 24 months
When the new version is released, migration will be necessary. Akeneo increased the time limit to migrate between 1.7 to 2.0 from 12 months to 24 months. However, the main migration process really should be completed by March 2018 because updates of 1.7 version end that month and all who will remain on 1.7 will be left with only minimal support.
Akeneo 2.0: symfony 3.3, php 7.1
The new version of Akeneo follows the latest technologies with Symfony 3.3 and PHP 7.1 versions. Due to the acceleration, PHP 7.1 was selected instead of PHP 5.0 (as it was in the previous version of Akeneo).
Bye to MongoDB, hi to MySQL
Akeneo announced that they are no longer working with database MongoDB. Instead, Akeneo chose a MySQL database, which is widely used among huge software providers because of acceleration and easy-to-use functions.
Improved connectivity – API connectors and new API interface
In the 1.7 version, Akeneo was able to implement integrations through xml and API. In order to increase optimization and convenience there was only one option- integration with API. Now it is also possible to create attribute associations, attribute families, upgraded API interface and API connectors. This new function is a huge help for those who are working with massive amounts of data.
Design structure will match Magento 2 design more accurately than the previous version
The design and user interface was completely changed and now we have a Magento 2 side bar. The structure of the filters has also changed, but the search field does not appear in Akeneo 2.0 and that seemed to cause some issues. The creators say that this and more functions will be added in the near future.
Improved product grid view management
When Magento 2 was released it provided a new function to choose custom displayed attributes in the columns, so that you could choose the most relevant information. And now Akeneo is offering the same thing, which makes the product grid view management more comfortable and personalized.
New feature – better products with variants management
Akeneo has implemented another feature almost the same as Magento’s which now allows you to manage products with variants in a more efficient way. Now admins can add options on the same product and create different variants inside the product page.
Pimgento update – in the beginning of November
Pimgento is a Magento and Akeneo integration module which is being installed in Magento. Since the update of this module is planned for the beginning of November, it is recommended to migrate starting at the second half of November.
More updates – 1st half of November
This webinar introduced us to the 1st version of Akeneo 2.0 which currently has far fewer features than 1.7 version. But November will bring updates which will make Akeneo 2.0 a superior software for Product Information Management.
